50 YEARS MEDAL!

Gordon Cree was our very special Entertainer at our Patron’s Mid Season Concert in June this year as he and our Senior Band entertained another full house in Dalmellington.

Archie Hutchison masterminded a great show for our Patrons and it was a very special night for one of our senior band players, Bryan Keast who was presented with the Scottish Brass Band Association 50 Years Lifetime Medal.  Hugh Johnstone MBE, Honorary Vice President of SBBA, presented the medal to Bryan and a bouquet of flowers to his wife Elaine.

Congratulations to Bryan on this well-deserved achievement and our thanks to the Patrons who came along for yet another great night in Dalmellington!

CANCER RESEARCH UK! … WE WANT TO HELP!

Dalmellington Band will join forces with our great Ayrshire friends and rivals Dunaskin Doon Band to give a concert in Dalmellington Community Centre on Sunday 24th October 2010 with the entire takings on the night to go to Lorna Dempsey’s Butterfly Events, raising money for Cancer Research UK!

We are in the early stages of preparation for the event and there will possibly be other entertainers on the night and we really hope to fill the Community Centre with an audience of well over 200, which we are allowed if we do not need to use tables and don’t provide teas and home baking etc. so, it will be rows of seats and great entertainment to raise much needed cash for Cancer Research!

Dalmellington Community Association Committee have granted us a free lett for the concert, which will leave more money for our charity.  So, please put this date in your diary and we will write to our Patrons during September to let you know how to book tickets for the event.  We hope you will help us to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research UK!

CONDUCTING COURSE FOR THE BOYS!

Ian Taylor (junior band conductor) and David McLean (assistant conductor) have volunteered to attend a conducting course, organised by the Scottish Brass Band Association, towards the end of 2010. The course will have an online part, which will commence during August, with a practical weekend at a Scottish venue on October 16th and 17th and successful candidates will work towards the SBBA Foundation Conductors Diploma.

Candidates will have the pleasure of working with top names in the brass band world, including brilliant cornetist Roger Webster, who was our special guest soloist at the 2010 Senior Slow Melody event.  We wish our lads every success as they improve to benefit our junior band

RUBY’S DONATION!

Sadly, in a recent newsletter, we reported the death of former player Tom Mathieson from Newark in Nottinghamshire. Tom’s funeral was held in Dalmellington and Tom’s wife  Ruby, with family and friends, had a “cup of tea” in our band hall after the funeral service, before heading home down the M6.

In memory of Tom, Ruby has purchased a set of music stands for the band and we are extremely grateful for her very kind gesture.  Ruby asked us not to mention the price but, they were expensive!  A huge thanks to Ruby and her family, we will think of Tom and Ruby when we use the new stands!

MINERALS TRUST SUPPORTS NYBBS!

We are delighted to tell you that the Cumnock & Doon Valley Minerals Trust  have, again this year, decided to give grants to help players from our junior band to attend the prestigious annual brass band music course for young players to perform in the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland in St. Andrews in August.

Over one hundred young players, from all over Scotland, receive excellent tuition from experienced tutors, like Archie Hutchison, John Boax and other big names before performing in concert, at the end of the course, under their world renowned Principal Conductor Richard Evans.  Our very sincere thanks to Ken Robinson and the Minerals Trust Committee for assisting our young players again this year.

At the time of going to print, Duncan McCluskie and Kieran Purdie had received grants, although two other Dalmellington Band players Rachael Jones and Becky Mitchell, outwith the Minerals Trust catchment area, were also intending to go to St. Andrews. We wish them every success at NYBBS!
