The band competed in the Senior Cup in the Blackpool Winter gardens on Saturday 19th May and it turned out to be one of those days. To be honest, we produced such a mixed bag of a performance on stage that we left the adjudicators not knowing whether we were brilliant or rotten!
The test-piece was Philip Sparkes Dances and Alleluias and it was an extremely difficult piece which featured solos all round the instruments. Our start (first 40 bars or so) was so poor that, in boxing terms, we would have had to knock out our opponents just to get a draw. We had lost so many points in the first part of the piece that it was difficult to convince the judges that we were, in fact, a good band. However, it was certainly not all bad, infact we had soloists who gave stunning playing during the performance and we received loud cheers from the audience at the end of the performance. Sandy McCulloch and David McKellar led by example and gave high quality performances on the day and all of our soloists played with distinction during the performance. Archie Hutchison achieved a very musical performance, which we have now come to expect from him and overall we realise what a poor start can do to your chances on the day of the contest. We were simply not good enough!
We finished 12th out of 18 bands and retain our place in the Senior Cup section for 2008.
