SENIOR CUP 2010
Dalmellington Band members and officials were thrilled to be awarded a top 3 place in the annual Senior Cup Brass Band Competition in the famous Winter Gardens Complex in Blackpool on Saturday 15th May.
The band produced a quality performance of Philip Sparke’s fiendishly difficult test-piece “Year of the Dragon” to take 3rd prize, including a Certificate, a Glass Trophy and a cash prize of £300.
There were 20 good bands, in championship sections from all over the United Kingdom, competing for the top four places which guaranteed promotion into the Grand Shield Competition held in Blackpool’s Opera House in 2011.The band was conducted by Professional Conductor - Richard Evans from England.
Our prize-winning performance in Blackpool was even more remarkable, because we had two absolute Brass Band Legends in our playing squad - Archie Hutchison (not yet 70 and the band’s Musical Director ) was one of the finest cornet players in the United Kingdom during the 70s and 80s and won 5 Terris Gold Medals for being Best Cornet Player at various Scottish Championship Contests during his playing days with Dalmellington Band.
Jimmy Graham (just over 70) now staying in Whitburn, was one of the finest euphonium players in the United Kingdom during the 70s and 80s and was Solo Champion of Scotland in 1971 and 1973, during his playing days with Dalmellington Band.
We also had 7 young players, who still play with our junior band, in our line-up to complete yet another very special day in the fine history of Ayrshire’s top brass band!
